Tirupur: Bank employees in Tirupur went on a strike against the Centre’s move to privatize Government banks as part of the All-India Strike on Thursday.

The Government of India has been in the process of privatizing Government banks in recent times. This has led to much objection with employees at various banks across the country protesting against the Center's policy decision. An All India Strike is being staged by bank employees on Thursday and Friday (Dec 16 and 17) in Tirupur.

The Government of India announced the privatization of public sector banks in the budget presented last February and is preparing to move the Banks Act Amendment Bill in the current Parliamentary session. Branches of 352 nationalized banks have participated in the strike with more than 3,000 bank employees and managers on strike. This has severely affected the services of the banks.

This will result in a cost of Rs. 1500 crore cash transactions being affected in a day in the district. The agitators mentioned that all the ATMs will work on the days of the strike as the ATM centers were filled with the necessary money. More than 50 bank employees are on strike near Usha Theatre along with Canara Bank officials Prasad, Ravi Kumar and Satish to protest against the privatization of public sector banks.
