Coimbatore: The Kinathukadavu vegetable market witnessed an increased inflow of tomatoes from the Northern states which led to auctioning of the vegetable at ₹ 800 per box. Prices of tomatoes are thus expected to go down at all retail shops which could be a huge relief for consumers.
The prices of vegetables, especially tomatoes spiked in the past few weeks as the produce was affected due to monsoonal rains. A 14 kg box of country tomatoes was sold at ₹ 1000 - ₹ 1500 in Kinathukadavu vegetable market leading to increased costs (₹ 120/kg) at the retail shops in the city.
The inflow from outside states like Maharashtra and Gujarat has increased currently and 1000 boxes of tomatoes arrive each day at the market. Only 500 boxes of tomatoes have arrived from local areas thus far.
14 kg of country tomato boxes were auctioned for upto Rs.800 which has raised the hopes of consumers that prices at the retail shops are also likely to decrease after three weeks.
