Pollachi: More than 100 differently-abled people were arrested for blocking roads in Pollachi while staging a road roko demonstration highlighting the meagre allowance provided to them.
As part of the state-wide protest against the insufficient allowance for the differently-abled, the Tamil Nadu Association that fights for the rights of all the differently-abled and caregivers staged a protest in front of the Sub-Collector’s office in Pollachi. The agitators demanded that the monthly allowance of ₹ 3000 be provided in Tamil Nadu similar to that of Pondicherry and Telangana and ₹ 5000 for those with severe disability.
Further, they demanded the formation of a special committee in the Panchayat under the 100-day work scheme and provide four-hour work as per the G.O.Ms, converting the ration cards to AAY cards with 35 kg rice per month, as per the direction of the Court and the Union Government.
They also demanded that housing should be provided to families with disabilities who do not have a home, camps in villages to facilitate IDs for those who do not have one, bus travel concession and rail travel concession certificate to be issued locally. The agitators stated that the protest will continue in case the Government does not meet their demands.
