Two persons who attempted to sneak 25 bags of ration rice to Kerala were caught red-handed by the officials during a vehicle check.
Officials led by Madhukkarai Taluk Supply Officer were on vehicle search at Velanthavalam, Kumittipathi, and Valukkal areas in order to prevent smuggling of ration rice to Kerala.
The officials chased down an auto-rickshaw that ran past them during the check at around 3 am on Monday and in the search, the officers seized 700 kg of ration rice in 25 30-kg weighing bags, which was being smuggled to Kerala.
The authorities then arrested the driver, Peter, 56, of Thirumurai Nagar and Valliammal, 48, of Renga Samudram near Pichanur.
The smugglers were later handed over to the Madhukkarai Police and an investigation is underway.
