Coimbatore: In two individual incidents, police officers arrested two persons from two different locations in the city for sale of gutkha and ganja during raids.
During vehicle check in Madukkarai police limits, sub-inspector Mathivannan, Kuppuraj and head constable Ravi, arrested Thirupugazh, 38, son of Chidambaram of Madukkarai Seerapalayampudur for hoarding and selling gutkha pan masala to shops. The cops seized 22 kg of tobacco products from Thirupugazh and lodged him in judicial custody.
In a similar incident, the Pollachi East Sub-inspector Kaleb, received a secret tip-off about on sale of banned ganja in Kottur bus stand. Police nabbed the accused identified as Muhammad Abbas, 27, son of Muhammad Iqbal of Thiruneelakandar Street of Pollachi for selling ganja hoarded in the bag.
300 grams of the contraband and ₹.1000 was seized from Muhammad Abbas and he is in judicial custody.
The city police have formed special squads upon the orders of the district superintendent Selvanagarathinam, and conduct constant vigil in and around the city and outskirts in order to curb the sale of government-banned products such as gutkha, pan masala, ganja etc.
They have subsequently insisted on informing the police on such sales through the numbers- 94981-81212 (Control room) and WhatsApp number 77081-00100 and the details of informants will be kept confidential.
