Coimbatore: The voters list released recently in Coimbatore ahead of the local body elections carried the name of two voters in Hindi, leading to controversy.
Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Commissioner, Raja Gopal Sunkara released the voters list in Coimbatore for the urban local body elections recently.Out of this, 100 wards in Coimbatore Corporation reported 7,69,397 male voters, 7,68,736 women voters and 278 third gender voters, totalling to 15,38,411 voters.
Further, it was announced that the electoral rolls had been displayed in the Corporation's main office and 5 zonal offices. The names of Manoj Kumar of Bharathi Park area and his father have been published in Hindi in Coimbatore South Constituency Ward No. 69 and Booth No. 842. This ruffled voters and was strongly condemned.
CCMC Commissioner, Raja Gopal Sunkara clarified saying, "The name of the person in the Southern constituency was in Hindi in the electoral roll released by the Election Commission of India during the Assembly elections. At present, we have finalized the electoral rolls and released details including names, ward-wise. We had nothing to do with publishing a name in Hindi. The person concerned can make an application and change his name in Tamil," he added.
