Coimbatore: The rural police destroyed ganja plantations in the Sulur area based on the tip-off by the locals on Saturday.

Sulur Sub-Inspector of Police Navaneethakrishnan and team arrived at the Ramayyan Pond, Pappampatti under Sultanpet union in Sulur Taluk on Saturday after receiving a tip-off on the ganja plantations bred in the locality. The plantations were removed burnt in the presence of the Village Administrative Officer.

While frequent arrests and action has been taken against cannabis sellers, the people of Sulur said there was a large circulation of ganja and some people were involved in the sale carrying the contraband in two-wheelers to the seekers.

Moreover, the public has alleged that ganja has been cultivated in some other places in the Pappampatti area. It is also said that the public is reluctant to identify specific locations as cannabis dealers threaten informants.

The public and social activists have appealed for the eradication of cannabis from the area which is harmful to health and society. While the action is being taken against those selling ganja in Sulur areas, the discovery of cannabis plants has come as a shock to the people of the area.
