The Southern Regional Green Tribunal judge has issued orders stating the Salem Divisional Railways, Southern Railways and the Union Railways will be additional respondents in the Navakkarai elephants death case.
Coimbatore: Three elephants, including a pregnant elephant, were rammed to death on November 26 when the speeding train hit them in the Navakkarai area of Coimbatore.

Subsequently, many urged the Railways and the Government to take appropriate measures to prevent the death of elephants on the Madukkarai-Walayar route.
Based on a daily report on the issue, Justice K Ramakrishnan and technical member K Sathyagopal of the Southern Region National Green Tribunal in Chennai have issued orders in a case filed by “People for cattle in India” on avoiding the human-animal conflict and saving elephants by providing emergency care. NGT Judge K Ramakrishnan and technical member K SathyaGopal of Sothern Regional NGT have added Southern Railways, Union railways and the Salem Divisional Railways as additional respondents in the elephant death case in Navakkarai.
"To minimalize the human-animal conflict, this point has to be taken into consideration on the death of elephants in Madukkarai in the Action Plan on Prevention of Animal Deaths due to human intervention. Therefore, the petitioner should take steps to include the Southern Railway Office, Salem Divisional Railway Office, and the Union Ministry of Railways as additional respondents in the case to enable them to issue appropriate orders," read the judgment.
