Coimbatore: Onions would be on sale for Rs. 45 from today at Pannai Pasumai shops in Coimbatore.
Due to rains, influx of onion to Tamil Nadu from states including Karnataka and Maharashtra was reduced as a result of which the price of onions soared up steeply. Onions are selling at Rs 65 to Rs 100 per kg and shallots at over Rs 100 per kg.
Cooperative Minister Sellur Raju announced earlier that onions would be imported from abroad and sold for Rs. 45 at Pannai Pasumai shops across Tamil Nadu. Accordingly, they are being sold for Rs. 45 at Pannai Pasumai shops in various districts of Tamil Nadu since October 22.
However, due to lack of supply, the onions were not available at Coimbatore Pannai Pasumai shops. Meanwhile, Cooperative Department officials said onions will be sold at Pannai Pasumai shops for Rs 45 from today.
