Coimbatore: Sanitation workers attached to Thirumalayampalayam Town Panchayat in Coimbatore staged a peaceful protest outside the panchayat office, alleging that they were required to work continuously from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and demanding that their working hours be regulated and workload reduced.
Sanitation work is carried out across more than 100 residential areas and major roads under the jurisdiction of Thirumalayampalayam Town Panchayat. The workers said they had been facing several difficulties over their working hours.
According to the workers, they were being instructed to report for duty at 6 a.m. and remain at work until 6 p.m., effectively requiring them to work for 12 hours a day. They said the extended working hours had placed them under considerable physical and mental strain.
The workers also pointed out that sanitation work involves strenuous physical labour and alleged that being required to work continuously for 12 hours was adding to their workload and making it difficult for them to carry out their duties.
Condemning the alleged 12-hour work schedule, the workers gathered outside the town panchayat office and staged a peaceful protest, demanding that their working hours be fixed appropriately and their workload reduced.
During the protest, they raised several demands, including that they should not be compelled to work for 12 hours, that proper working hours be fixed for sanitation workers and that the workload be reduced.
They also urged the town panchayat administration to hold talks with them and resolve their grievances at the earliest. The workers called for measures to be taken keeping their welfare in mind while determining their working hours.
The protest led to a brief tense situation outside the Thirumalayampalayam Town Panchayat office.
