Water Levels Rise in Aliyar, Parambikulam and Sholayar Dams

Water levels in Aliyar, Parambikulam and Sholayar dams in Coimbatore district have risen significantly due to southwest monsoon rains. Water Resources Department officials reported increased inflow to all three reservoirs as of August 21.


Coimbatore: The water levels in major reservoirs of Coimbatore district – Aliyar, Parambikulam and Sholayar dams – have registered significant increases due to continuous southwest monsoon rainfall. Water Resources Department officials released the water level details of these dams as of August 21.




Aliyar dam, located near Anaimalai, has a full storage capacity of 120 feet. As a result of rainfall in the dam's catchment areas, the current water level stands at 62.6 feet as of August 21. The dam is receiving an inflow of 240 cubic feet per second. Simultaneously, water is being discharged from the reservoir at a rate of 250 cubic feet per second.




Parambikulam dam, situated near Pollachi, has a full storage capacity of 72 feet. Due to continuous southwest monsoon rainfall, the dam's catchment areas are receiving steady water inflow. As of August 21, the water level has risen to 39.83 feet. The dam is recording a high inflow of 1,105 cubic feet per second. Water is being released from the dam at 24 cubic feet per second.




Sholayar dam, located near Valparai, has a full storage capacity of 160 feet. Following good rainfall in the catchment areas, the water level stands at 104.43 feet as of August 21. This reservoir is receiving an inflow of 1,052 cubic feet per second. Additionally, a higher volume of 1,371 cubic feet per second is being discharged from the dam, according to Water Resources Department officials.




With the southwest monsoon continuing to be favorable, water levels in these dams are expected to rise further. Officials have advised farmers and the public to closely monitor announcements from the Water Resources Department.
