There are more than 10 festive special trains plying from Coimbatore to Chennai, Mayiladuthurai and Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram in the state of Kerala. As Diwali festival is to be celebrated on November 14, there is a demand for special express trains from Coimbatore to the districts including Thoothukudi, Madurai and Nagercoil.
Jameel Ahmed, president of the Coimbatore District Train Passengers' Association said, "Most people from the southern districts, including Madurai, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Tirunelveli and Nagercoil, who stay and work in various parts of the Coimbatore district, will go to their hometowns to celebrate Diwali. Special express trains should run on Coimbatore Tirupur, Erode, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Nagercoil route and Coimbatore, Podanur, Kinathukadavu, Madathukulam, Udumalai, Palani and Madurai route.
He added that, "If special trains run 10 days before Diwali, it will be convenient for commuters. Similarly, if special trains run for 15 days after the festival, it will be easier for workers to return to Coimbatore and resume work."
