Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu oral maxillofacial surgeons association organised a walkathon in the city to create awareness on oral cancer, road accidents and deformities. More than 750 enthusiastic participants kick-started the walkathon from Nehru stadium on Thursday.

"Oral cancer can be treated, if it is detected early. So to create awareness among people, the oral and maxillofacial surgeons association organised this event," said Dr. Kannan Balaraman.
He added that "Every 4.5 minutes, an Indian is dying in a road accident. Every day, the number of vehicles on the roads are on the rise hence it is important for motorists to pay attention and obey traffic rules while driving. Importantly, wearing helmets and seat belts are mandatory".

So to bring this awareness to people, the oral and maxillofacial surgeons association organised this event," said Dr. Kannan Balaraman. "Every 4.5 minutes, an Indian is dying in a road accident. Every day, the number of vehicles on the roads are on the rise and we should drive carefully using helmets and seat belts. To make people aware of all these areas, we are conducting this event," he added.
In the 5 km walkathon which was flagged off by A Pari, IPS, I.G of West zone, participants ranging from a six-year old to a 90-year old citizen, and also two enthusiasts in wheelchairs took part.
