Fortis Escorts hospital in a statement released on Friday said the 1983 World Cup-winning captain went to the hospital's emergency department at 1:00 am on October 23rd and consulted the hospital for his chest pain. It also said that an emergency coronary angioplasty was performed by Dr. Atul Mathur, Director of Cardiology Department at midnight.
The hospital said that Kapil Dev is in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but in a stable condition. He is likely expected to be discharged in a "couple of days." Several sporting personalities wished him speedy recovery through Twitter posts. Celebrities including Indian skipper Virat Kohli, badminton star Saina Nehwal, Indian cricket player Gautam Gambhir and commentator Harsha Bhogle took to Twitter to wish him a speedy recovery.
Kapil Dev led India to its first ever World Cup in 1983. Kapil Dev is a renowned all-rounder and he finished his Test career with 434 wickets, which was a world record then. He also scored 5,248 runs in the longer format at an average of 31.05.
He played 225 one-day internationals and picked up 253 wickets. He scored 3,783 ODI runs and his 175 not out against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup is still regarded by many as one of the best ODI innings ever.
