Tirupur: The Chennai Pollution Control Board directed the closure of the refinery in Tirupur on charges of pollution and failing to comply with the norms despite being alerted thrice.
There are a large number of dyeing plants and printing companies functioning in Tirupur and surrounding areas with the approval of the Pollution Control Board authorities. The Pollution Control Board officials are taking action to identify plants functioning without complying with the environmental safety norms and polluting groundwater.
Certain dyeing plants have jointly set up public treatment plants in their respective areas to treat the dyeing water. The Pollution Control Board Officials inspected the treatment plant at Mudalipalayam Road, Tirupur a few days back and it was revealed that the solid waste and salt are disposed of in open spaces after treatment of dyeing water. There were also complaints of excess ash waste emancipating from the plant.
The PCB Officials sent a report to Chennai as steps were not taken to rectify the processing despite issuing notices more than three times. The Chennai Pollution Control Board ordered the closure of the plant and the disconnection of the power supply.
Due to this, the operation of 21 dyeing plants constituted with the plant is now paralyzed.
