Coimbatore District General Engineering and Mechanical Workers' Union (CITU), staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore Collectorate. They condemned the attack of a migrant woman worker by her hostel warden and the mill manager at a private mill in Udayampalaym.The two accused were arrested after a video went viral on social media on the 5th of this month.
An investigation is underway and a protest led by CITU District General Secretary Krishnamurthy was called for on Wednesday. The agitators placed the following demands:-
1.Implementation of the Act of 1971 and 1981 to protect the migrant (guest) workers of the Northern State working in Coimbatore.
2.A complaint box for the migrant (guest) workers at their workplaces and monitor them once a month.
3.Inspection of industries should be done to enforce labour laws.
4.Good quality accommodation for the workers and their families.
5.The Government of Tamil Nadu should call the workers ‘guest workers’ like in Kerala.
They also urged the government to make a note of these demands and take swift action.
