3 arrested for hoarding and selling banned tobacco products in Coimbatore suburbs

About 120 kg of tobacco products were thus seized in a single day in the suburbs of Coimbatore, on Tuesday.


Coimbatore: Acting upon the orders of Coimbatore SP, S Selvanagarathinam, police personnel had been deployed in the suburbs of Mettupalayam, Annur and Pollachi to completely eradicate illegal sale of tobacco products including ganja and hans, and also to arrest those selling tobacco products.

The police conducted an intensive search of a business premises on New Extension Road, Mettupalayam on the basis of a tip-off received by Inspector Muthupandi that the business owner was storing and selling tobacco products. About the same time, about 72 kg of tobacco products was confiscated from the 38-year old son of Kamaluddin of the same street and Rabideen (50), son of Tamim Ansari, who had stockpiled and sold 18 kg of banned tobacco products at a wholesale grocery store on Annaji Rao Road. Both were arrested.

In another intensive vehicle search in the Pudur area of Sulur Muthukkundan, Sunder (30), son of Murugan of Sulur Nehru Nagar area was arrested by the police and about 30 kg of banned tobacco products and a two-wheeler were confiscated from him.

About 120 kg of tobacco products were thus seized in a single day in the suburbs of Coimbatore on Tuesday with three persons arrested for the crime.
