Consultative meeting held in Nilgiris on Coonoor helicopter crash

Headed by DGP Sylendra Babu, a detailed consultative meeting on the army chopper crash which resulted in the demise of Chief of Defence Staff, Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 other army personnel was held in Coonoor on Thursday.



The Nilgiris: A detailed consultative meeting on the IAF chopper crash was held in Coonoor on Thursday under the chairmanship of DGP Sylendra Babu. 

The Chief of Defence Staff, Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 other army personnel tragically lost their lives when the IAF chopper in which 14 members were travelling to the Wellington Army College on Wednesday, from the Sulur Air Base for the closing ceremony of army officials crashed due to low visibility in the region. 

The crash site was near Nanjappa Chathiram within the Upper Coonoor police station limits. Pilot Varun Singh is battling for his life at at Command Hospital in Bengaluru. He was shifted to the hospital from Wellington for further treatment. 

An investigation into the accident and a detailed consultative meeting on the accident was held at Coonoor on Thursday evening, under the chairmanship of the Tamil Nadu Police Director General, Sylendra Babu. The Chief of Coimbatore Range Police, Nilgiris District Superintendent of Police, Forensic Experts and the investigating officer in the accident case were present at the meeting. The Forensic Inspector gave detailed instructions and suggestions.

A case has been registered under section 174 CrPC 129/2021 at the Upper Coonoor Police Station. Muthu Manickam, Additional SP, Nilgiris district has been appointed as the investigating officer and 26 witnesses have been questioned. The DGP lauded Police Inspector Prithviraj, Special SI Ravi, Constable Siva and ADSP Muthu Manickam who rushed to the spot immediately and rescued four army officers who were amidst the flames of the chopper crash.
