Coimbatore: The farmers have submitted a petition to the Pollachi sub-collector demanding closure of gravel quarry on issues of water scarcity, pollution in the region
Farmers in Kinathukadavu Periyakoundanur, Nallikoundampalayam area have submitted a petition to the Pollachi Sub-collector demanding closure of the gravel quarry in Devarayapuram. The private quarry has been supplying stones to Kerala and around 100 tippers carry stones from the quarry.
Farmers lament that the bombarding in quarries poses a threat to the borewells and the water levels have decreased in the last ten days due to continuous bombarding. They added that rearing animals has become a difficulty and agriculture has been affected due to lack of water, which was their only source of income.
The petitioners stated that the quarry has been causing heavy air pollution, affecting the farmers and the public, and thus demanded canceling the quarry’s license.
