Farmers urge TN Chief Minister to allow Seed Certification Director's office to continue operating in Coimbatore

The Department has been functioning for the last 50 years with its headquarters in Coimbatore district with 835 employees, with 60 employees in Coimbatore.


Coimbatore: Farmers have urged the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M K Stalin to take action to allow the office of the Director of Seed Certification Department operating in Coimbatore to continue operating in Coimbatore without shifting it to Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association, District President, S Palanisamy said, 'The Tamil Nadu Seed Certification Department, Organ Certification Department has been functioning for the last 50 years with its headquarters in Coimbatore district. The Department has 835 employees. Coimbatore alone has 60 employees. Through this Department, the seeds of farmers, contract growers, private seed producers etc. are being tested and certified.

The certified seed farm record in 10 years is 55 thousand hectares. Certified seed production is about 1.10 lakh tonnes. A total of 70 percent seed farms are registered from Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Salem, Dindigul, Theni and Madurai districts. This office of the Director is located in Coimbatore and is centered at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Therefore, on behalf of the farmers, we request the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu not to shift this office to Chennai.'
