Social activists and politicians gathered condemning the forest department for removing the huts set up by the Kallarkudi, stating encroachment.

Pollachi: An agitation was held in front of the BSNL office in Pollachi demanding action against the forest officials for clearing the huts of the Kallar tribe. They also demanded relief for the tribes.

Members of all the political parties and social activists gathered at the BSNL office in Pollachi agitating against the forest department. The forest officials reportedly removed the tents set up by the Kallar tribe of Manampalli yesterday, stating encroachment of forest lands.

Over 100 people of the Kallar tribe lost their 21 houses in the Kallarkudi tribal village in the rains in 2019, after which the community was settled temporarily in Tamil Nadu Tea Plantation Association Workers Quarters in Thaimudi. The tribes however, after a prolonged protest were issued pattas by the state government to construct houses at the Theppakulamedu area on 7th November.

The tribes had constructed huts in the allotted lands which were removed by the forest officers stating the lands belonged to the forest department and not their allotted zone. The agitators demanded charges of the Prevention of Atrocities Act against the forest officials and relief assistance for the victims.
