Concerns of Omicron intensifies surveillance in Nilgiris borders; 2000 tested everyday

The Police Department and health care officials have intensified checking at borders in Nilgiris as the new variant of Covid has raised concerns of increasing risk rates.


The Nilgiris: The police and the health department have intensified surveillance along the borders of Nilgiris with the growing concern about the new variant, Omicron. As many as 2000 people are being screened every day, at the checkpoints.

Tourists visiting Nilgiris from other states are closely monitored at the borders to avoid the possibility of the next Covid variant, Omicron’s spread.13 check posts including Kizh Nadugani, Kakkanallah and Thaloor in the district limits are monitored by the Revenue Department, medical team and health department. The newly-appointed Ooty District Collector, S P Amrith stated that 2000 tests are being carried out every day.

The Nilgiris district connects three major south states, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.Due to the confirmation of two Omicron cases in Karnataka on Thursday, precautionary measures have been intensified in Nilgiris. A special monitoring team has been appointed at 13 check posts including Kizh Nadugani, Thaloor and Kakkanallah borders connecting Kerala and Karnataka.

The team consists of revenue personnel, health workers, a doctor, a nurse and a police personnel who monitor passengers from other states, 24 hours a day on a rotational basis. The district administration has decided to send back tourists entering Nilgiris if detected with symptoms. Locals with symptoms will be kept in home isolation for eight days, according to the Nilgiris District Collector. He subsequently urged all the public to vaccinate. "Thus far, no one in Nilgiris district has been infected with the Omicron virus," he added.
