An auto driver tried to self immolate with his wife at the Tirupur District Collectorate demanding action against a relative who defrauded them of money.
Tirupur: Varadhan (35), an auto driver at Kovilvazhi bus stand from Ayyampalayam area of Tirupur and his wife Satya, live with two daughters.
Varadhan's relative Muthusamy had asked for a loan of Rs. 1 lakh to start a business over a year ago. Following this, Varadhan mortgaged his children's jewellery at the bank and gave Rs.1 lakh to Muthusamy. Muthusamy who had taken the loan from Varadhan had reportedly not even paid the installments to the bank for a month after taking the loan. When Varadhan questioned Muthusamy, the latter reportedly denied that he had taken any money. Muthusamy had also lodged a complaint with the police against Varadhan for assaulting him.
Varadhan and his wife Satya arrived at the District Collector's office on Friday, took a diesel can that was brought in hidden and poured it over them, and tried to set themselves on fire.
But the police on security duty immediately snatched the diesel can from Varadhan and conducted an investigation.
They were then instructed to lodge a complaint at the Veerapandi police station regarding the money fraud.
