On International Day of Persons with Disabilities Rs.19.89 lakh welfare assistance was provided by Coimbatore District Collector Sameeran.
Coimbatore: International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed annually to raise awareness on the challenges faced by people with disabilities in their daily lives.
Following this, the Day of Persons with Disabilities is being celebrated all over Tamil Nadu today.
As part of this, the Coimbatore Siddhapudur Corporation Boys' High School celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities and hosted an event today under the chairmanship of Coimbatore District Collector Sameeran. More than 25 charities participated.
For 43 beneficiaries at this event, Rs.19.89-lakh worth welfare assistance was provided.
This included a scooter for 10, a sewing machine for 10, modern prosthesis for 2, battery-powered wheelchair for 4, scholarship for 5, grant for 16 families who died of natural causes, financial assistance for 5 disabled people starting a business and assistance for 2 disabled people for livelihood.
The head of the district administration who spoke at the event said the word disable has been changed to differently-abled.
The Coimbatore District Collector said that a special office for the differently-abled has been set up and advice is being given as per their need. He said that all government welfare schemes continue to be available to the differently-abled and the government has continued to make 100 per cent subsidy available to the disabled.
The event was attended by the Coimbatore District Collector, the Primary Education Officer and the Directors of various charities.
