The city police arrested over 100 persons who were despite a ban, commemorating the 2nd year death anniversary of the victims of wall collapse that engulfed 17 people.
Coimbatore: The city police have arrested more than 100 persons in Coimbatore for paying memorial service to 17 victims of the Mettupalayam house collapse incident. An arrest took place as there was a ban on commemorating the deceased.
More than 100 people of the Dravidian Cultural Federation were arrested for attempting to pay homage to the 17 victims of the collapse of the compound wall of the house in Mettupalayam.
17 people belonging to two families were tragically killed when the compound wall of a house collapsed in Nadur AD colony area of Mettupalayam on 2nd December 2019. The second-year death anniversary was observed on Thursday and only the family of the deceased was allowed to pay respects.
The police have refused to grant permission to the public welfare organization to pay their respects in the area, and has banned processions and demonstrations in view of the law and order issue. However, more than 100 people who marched despite the ban to pay respects, from the Mettupalayam bus stand to Nadur A.D. Colony, were stopped, arrested and lodged in a private marriage hall, as the procession affected the traffic in the area for some time.
Tributes were being paid at the accident spot, on behalf of various organizations. The police have, however, refused to grant permission to public organizations keeping in mind law and order situation. More than 500 police personnel have been deployed at various places across the city such as Annur Road, Nadur AD Colony, Coimbatore Road, and Mettupalayam bus stand where the incident took place.
In addition, vehicles such as Vajra Bahan have been stationed in to prevent any untoward incident and security has been tightened.
