Sanitary staff cleaning sewer in Coimbatore without wearing safety equipment; Notice to contractor

Social activists say such incidents and casualties continue to be a recurring theme, despite a court order not to employ cleaners without proper safety equipment. The corporation and the health department have taken legal action against the incident that took place yesterday.


Coimbatore: Coimbatore Corporation employs over 4,000 sanitary staff on contract and permanent basis. Yesterday at the Coimbatore Government Hospital, the removal of waste by the Corporation sanitary staff without wearing safety equipment raised great controversy.

Social activists say such incidents and casualties continue to be a recurring theme, despite a court order, not to employ cleaners without proper safety equipment. The corporation and the health department have taken legal action against the incident that took place yesterday. Accordingly, a notice has been issued to private contractor, Periyasamy for employing sanitary staff without adequate safety equipment.

Commenting on the incident, the General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Annal Ambedkar Health Cleaning and Public Works Association, Selvam, said, "The corporation has human waste disposal machines but they are operated only in large areas. It is not used in small canals and sewers."
