'5000 kits ready at Coimbatore GH to detect Omicron virus types:' Dr. Nirmala, GH Dean

The Coimbatore Government Hospital Dean stated that 5000 kits are ready to test new virus types such as Omicron and subsequently warned the public to maintain safety measures.

Coimbatore: Government Hospital Dean, Dr. Nirmala stated that 5000 thousand kits have been kept ready in the city's Government Hospital to test the new virus presence, Omicron.

Daily incidence of Covid cases is less than 100 on an average in the city. However, surveillance and preventive measures have been intensified across the country and the healthcare officials and the district administration have been seeking advice from the Health Department on preventive measures due to the spread of Omicron in other countries.

Speaking on the issue, Dr. Nirmala, Principal, Government Hospital Medical College, Coimbatore stated, “People are advised to be aware and follow proper preventive measures though the incidence of Coronavirus has decreased in Coimbatore. The new potent virus, Omicron is spreading rapidly in other countries. The variant is said to be fast-spreading and the extent to which the vaccines currently administered are safe is yet to be ascertained. However, vaccines are a vital element in boosting immunity. Similarly, the highest incidence and death have been detected in those who have not been vaccinated.“

Adding that there are no cases of Omicron in Coimbatore, Dr. Nirmala stated that people should not fear but just be careful. "The Omicron variant has mutated through the Delta variant that caused the second wave," stated Dr. Nirmala. "GH has been equipped with the necessary facility for Omicron testing. If the test detects symptoms, facilities have been made to send samples to a laboratory in Chennai to confirm. 5,000 testing kits are ready in Coimbatore," she added.
