Coimbatore: The rural police have arrested a 37-year-old businessman who threatened public with a gun on Tuesday.

The police team led by Katoor Police Sub-Inspector Velli Raj during a patrol at the Avarapalayam railway gate area received a tip-off stating a man had been secretly taking pictures of the passersby and threatening them using a gun.

The squad rushed to the spot and monitored the subject for confirmation. Shortly afterward the man picked up a concealed pistol and threatened the passers-by. The police team chased and trapped the man as he fled the place and conducted a search in which two pistols were confiscated from him.

Upon investigation, the accused was identified as Sameer-ul-Huq, (37), son of Abdul Ali belonging to Nava India, Coimbatore. The accused owned a well-known company selling computer spare parts. A pen drive containing obscene videos of women was also taken from Sameer’s custody. It was learned that the accused used the videos to extorting cash from the victims.

Those failing to comply with his demands were threatened with death. The Katoor police passed on information to the higher officials and are in the process of identifying the victims. Sameer-ul-Huq has been charged under sections including possession of a gun and death threats.

In the recent past, people possessing air guns stirred the public. A Kerala-based businessman was caught for carrying a pistol two days back at a hotel room in Gandhipuram. The businessman was set free after he produced necessary documents for carrying the gun, which stated he had that for personal reasons.
