Coir industry sector play a vital role in protecting the environment. In India there are more than 22,000 coir industries functioning. Out of the this more than 7,000 industries are established in Tamil Nadu.


Coimbatore: Pollachi which comes under Coimbatore district play a vital role inthe coir industry sector. More than one lakh people's have got job opportunities.

There are various products manufactured using coir such as Coir Geo woventextiles, Coir wood, pillow covers, various decorative items, agriculture done with the help of Cocopeat. Etc.

Presently deforestation is one of the main reason for the global warming issue. Coir Woods are one of the best alternative for deforestation says industry expert's. They also stress that increasing the awareness and usage among general public is need of the hour.

'Coir Woods ' usage will help to stop cutting down 17,000 trees every day!



United Nation Development Program (UNDP), Coir Consultant and Coir Board, Government of India, Member, S.K.Gowthaman said,'Tamil Nadu Government has announced that Coir processing industry would be established at Pollachi in Coimbatore district at project cost of Rs 21 crores. We whole heartedly welcome this initiative by the government. More than 1,750 Coir industries functioning in Pollachi. Presently Indian Coir industry witness more than Rs 2,000 crores export business and more thanRs 6,000 crores business in the domestic market each year. But till now 90% coir is exported only as raw material to China.

Presently in India everyday 17,000 tree's are cut down for wood purposes. Whereas 'Coir Wood' stands as the best alternative for the normal woods which are produced by cutting down the trees.

All types of works which are done using woods can be done by'Coir Woods'. There are many benefits Such as products made from coir woods will not catch fire easily. It stands as the best alternative for deforestation. Above all India will become the top Exporter of furnitures to various foreign countries if more importance is given to increase the awareness among general peoples about the importance and usage of of 'Coir woods'. He said.
