The Forest Department alleged that the train driver and aid were released because of coercion and hence an inquiry has been demanded into the deaths of the elephants in the train collision.
Coimbatore: The Forest Department stated that the train driver and his aid who were responsible for the Coimbatore train collision which resulted in the death of three elephants at the railway tracks in Madukkarai Wildlife Sanctuary were released only because of coercion. They stated that it was upto the Court to decide if they would be punished.
Three wild elephants were killed in a train collision while trying to cross the railway tracks at Madukkarai Wildlife Sanctuary in Navakkarai, the Mavuthampathy hill village in Coimbatore. The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has filed a case under the Forest Conservation Act against the engine driver Subair (54) and his assistant Akhil (31) from Kozhikode who were responsible for the accident.
An inquiry has been demanded regarding the deaths of the elephants in the train collision and for action to be taken. Coimbatore Zonal Chief Forest Officer Ramasubramaniam said, 'The 'chip' attached to the locomotive to detect the speed of the train was seized by the forest department. It will be handed over as the main document when the case comes to Court. Only the Court can convict both,' he added.
