Mohammad Rafiq, a resident of Golden Nagar in Tirupur tried to self-immolate at the Tirupur District Collectorate.
Tirupur: Mohammad Rafiq (32), a knitwear worker from the Golden Nagar area of Tirupur district lives with his two children, Mohammad Arshad and Abida Banu. Taslima Banu, his wife had died in an accident last year.
Mohammed Rafiq had given Rs.2 lakh cash and 15 sovereign of gold jewellery to his wife's sister Abrami for safekeeping. When asked to return the money and jewellery for his children's education purposes, Abrami is said to have spoken inappropriately to Mohammad Rafiq. He had lodged a complaint with the police but since no action had been taken thus far, Mohammad Rafiq petitioned the Tirupur District Collector, S Vineeth.
Since no action seems to have been initiated regarding his petition, Mohammad Rafiq arrived at the District Collector's office on Monday with his children, opened the petrol can he had hidden in his bag, poured it on himself and threatened to set himself on fire.
The police on security duty immediately snatched the petrol can from him and poured water on him.
He was then interrogated and taken to the District Collector to file a petition. The incident caused a stir at the premises of the Tirupur Collectorate.
