'Committee constituted to deal with issues related to obtaining death certificates of Covid-19 victims:' - Coimbatore District Collector

Coronavirus Death Confirmation Committee (COVID-19 DEATH ASCERTAINING COMMITTEE), headed by the District Revenue Officer and the District Birth Death-Registrar, comprising the Corporation Commissioner, Associate Director Health Services, Medical College Principal, Deputy Director Health Services and the District Epidemiologist has been constituted.

Coimbatore: Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic deaths, obtaining a proper death certificate for Covid-19 victims has become fraught with issues.

Death certificates are usually issued with the date of death but deaths due to Covid-19 have occurred in both hospitals and homes. Also, usually the cause of death is not mentioned in death certificates but in the case of obtaining Covid-19 relief for families of the deceased, details like date and cause of death are mandatory.

"Therefore, proof of cause of death is provided in Form 4 for deaths occurring in hospitals and at homes, to determine the cause of death. Evidence for the cause of death can be obtained from birth and death registrars. For those who do not have a medical certificate (4/44) for this death and are not satisfied with the cause of coronavirus death, a petition can be filed with the District Collector with the relevant documents. To this end, the Coronavirus Death Confirmation Committee (COVID-19 DEATH ASCERTAINING COMMITTEE), headed by the District Revenue Officer and the District Birth Death-Registrar, comprising the Corporation Commissioner, Associate Director Health Services, Medical College Principal, Deputy Director Health Services and the District Epidemiologist has been constituted.

The Committee will consider the petitions received thereon and will issue proof of cause of death in the appropriate form to the eligible persons. Therefore, if the cause of death is not available to the families of those who died of Covid-19, they are requested to avail help from the Committee," stated G S Sameeran, Coimbatore District Collector.
