Work is underway on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation Limited (TNFDC) to release 3-lakh fish at the Aliyar Dam near Pollachi.
Coimbatore: A fish farm is functioning on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation Limited (TNFDC) at Aliyar near Pollachi. The fish are being procured and reared from areas including Bhavani and Mettur. In these tanks, small fish of about ten centimetres in length are raised. Peanut butter and rice bran are fed to the fry.
Once the fish has grown to 10-cm, the fish are transported and stored in dams including Aliyar Dam, Thirumoorthy Dam and Amravati Dam. Permission is granted to catch fish once the fish raised in the dam have grown to one-kilogram. Accordingly, the authorities planned to stockpile fish at the Aliyar Dam this year. Yesterday, the authorities were involved in catching the fish which were reared on behalf of the Aliyar Fisheries Department and transporting them to the Aliyar Dam. Officials and staff of the department were involved in the task of releasing about 3-lakh fish of Katla, Rogu and Mirgal species into the dam.
Officials said, once the fish weigh up to one-kilogram, they will be allowed to catch them and then distributed to the public for food on behalf of the department.
