Preparations underway for prisoners released on humanitarian grounds on Arignar Anna's birthday

According to the government, studies are being carried out on prisoners serving life sentences in the central jails across Tamil Nadu. Based on these studies it is expected that 700 prisoners will be released soon on the basis of morality and humanity.


Coimbatore: On the occasion of Arignar Anna's 113th birthday, the Government of Tamil Nadu issued a guideline for the release of 700 life-sentenced prisoners on good faith and humanitarian grounds. Chief Minister MK Stalin made various announcements in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. During the police grant request, the Chief Minister announced that on the eve of Anna's 113th birthday, the government would take steps to reduce the sentences of 700 life-sentenced prisoners on long-term grounds and release them in good faith and on humanitarian grounds.

The Chief Minister also said that they would be released subject to certain conditions. Following this, work was underway to compile a list of inmates detained in all 10 Central Jails in Tamil Nadu. Various committees headed by prison officials were set up and ordered to study the pre-release in order to implement it. In particular, it was stipulated that those involved in 17 crimes, including rape, extremism, religious conflict, caste conflict, those who acted against the state, and those who tried to escape, would not be acquitted.

Accordingly, a study was carried out on the prisoners lodged in the Central Jail throughout Tamil Nadu. Regarding prisoners, guidelines were systematically examined. The guidelines were recommended to the government. Accepting the recommendation, the Tamil Nadu government has issued 17 rules to release 700 convicts. According to the government, studies are being carried out on prisoners serving life sentences in central jails across Tamil Nadu. Based on these studies it is expected that 700 prisoners will be released soon.
