The Sulur MLA Kandasamy, and various other party members took to blockade roads in Kallapalayam for at least three hours, demanding not to open liquor shops and bars in the vicinity.
Coimbatore:The Sulur MLA PP Kandasamy led a three-hour road roko demanding that liquor shops and bars are not be opened in Kallapalayam.
Various party members, led by Sulur MLA Kandasamy blocked the roads in Kallapalayam staging protests to not open the bars selling liquor in the area. Hundreds of vehicles marched along the Cochin Road. Members from various political parties and the Kallapalayam Panchayat Sabha ward members took part in the agitation.
Over 200 people staged protests in Kallapalayam.
DSP Ananda Arogyaraj, Sub-Inspectors Navaneethakrishnan, Rajendra Prasad, Special Sub-Inspectors Selvaraj, Ravichandran, Muthukumar, Intelligence wing Sub-Inspector Palanisami, Revenue Tahsildar Shakuntala, Village Administrative Officer held talks with the agitators but the agitators refused to give up.
The protesters demanded to hold talks with the regional manager of the bar, in person after which the regional manager Maharajan personally assured that the bar would not be opened, following which the picketing public dispersed.
Traffic smoothed at 5 pm. However, the reporters who interviewed the drunkards in the place where rebuked by the agitators who chanted slogans against the reporters covering the news story. Strangely enough, the regular drinkers stated that if the liquor shops and bars are shut, they will have to cover a distance of 8-km to buy alcohol or will be pushed to purchase liquor at a high price from illegal sellers.
