Mentally-ill husband beats wife to death in Vellakoil

Gurunathan, who was at home, is said to have been involved in an argument with his wife. Gurunathan hit his wife on the head with an iron bar (kadaparai) and ran away. In the impact of the attack, she fell to the ground and died on the spot.


Tirupur: Gurunathan (65) hails from Nadupalayam near Vellakoil in Tirupur district.



His wife is Poongodi (55). They have two daughters and a son. All of them are married. Poongodi works at a nearby yarn mill. She went to work at as usual last morning and returned home, at night, after calling it a day. Gurunathan, was at home at the time. It is said that he was involved in an argument with his wife.

A friend told Gurunathan's son Vinayak about this over the phone. His son Vinayagan immediately came to the location and tried to pacify him, Gurunathan hit his wife on the head with an iron bar (kadaparai) and ran away. In the impact of the attack, she fell to the ground and died on the spot.

Nearby people were shocked to hear screams in their home and informed the police. When police arrived at the scene, they found Poongodi lying dead in a pool of blood. She was lying on the porch nearby and it was revealed that Gurunathan had beaten his wife Poongodi to death and fled.

Police recovered Poongodi's body and sent it to Kangayam Government Hospital for autopsy. They are also looking for Gurunathan, who escaped. A case is filed in connection with the murder.
