Coimbatore: Public staged a protest here in Coimbatore seeking the release of Muslim prisoners, who have served more than two decades in jail. Several people, including women and children, were arrested after they insisted on the release of Islamic prisoners who have been in prison for more than 20 years.
As many as 36 people including women and children were arrested for staging a protest demanding the release of Islamic prisoners, who have served over 20 years behind bars. More than 50 Muslims joined the demonstration in the Athupalam region, here, demanding the release of Islamic prisoners.
The Government of Tamil Nadu issued orders on the early release of 700 life convicts based in good faith on the occasion of former Chief Minister Anna's birth anniversary. The GO also included that those involved in sexual assault, terrorism, caste, and religious conflict would not be eligible for release.
The agitators accused that the release of Islamic prisoners is delayed and raised slogans demanding their immediate release. The protestors refused to clear the protest venue, despite the police officers holding talks.
Thus, as many as 36 people, including children and women were arrested.
