At the District Collectorate in Tirupur, a woman tried to self-immolate for being unable to pay off her debts and was prevented by the public and journalists in the campus.
Tirupur: Rasathi (35) from Tirupur Thirumuruganpoondi, Periyayipalayam lives with her husband Nallathambi (43), and their 12-year old son and 11-year old daughter.
While working in a private company, the couple borrowed heavily from a women's self-help group. Nallathambi reportedly could not repay the loan by himself and as Rasathi also could not go to work to repay the loan, the self-help group of women landed at her home to ask for repayment of the loan.
Since the couple were unable to repay the entire loan, Rasathi visited the District Collectorate to submit a petition to the District Collector, S Vineeth to help her. But suddenly, Rasathi poured kerosene over herself and tried to self-immolate at the Collectorate.
On seeing this, the public and journalists in the campus prevented her from self-immolating. The incident caused a stir in the Collector's office.
