The Government College professor who had been harassing students was suspended after the charges were proved.
Coimbatore: The college professor who was arrested for sexually torturing students in Coimbatore, was suspended after investigation.
Raghunathan, (42) Head and Professor of the BBA Department in Government Arts College, Coimbatore has been sexually harassing girls. Complaints arose stating the professor had been sending messages and obscene information to the women students personally and making invites to meet him alone, join him on car travel and talking using words with double meaning.
The students filed a complaint at the District Collector’s office along with the Students' Federation of India (SFI) as no action was taken in this regard. Over 200 students protested in front of the college demanding legal action against him and not just departmental action. The students called off the protest as the police held talks with them and assured them of appropriate action.
A 20-year-old student lodged a complaint at the Race Course Police station that the professor had sexually harassed her. Based on the latest complaint and the complaint filed by the students, the student victims and the concerned professor were interrogated. The police then registered a case against professor Raghunathan under sections for kidnapping, rape, death threats and arrested and imprisoned him.
As per the directions of the University Grants Commission (UGC), an inquiry committee was constituted to investigate the sexual harassment and the professors and women student victims were interrogated in this regard. The charges were proven. Subsequently, departmental action against professor Raghunathan was initiated. The College Principal issued orders suspending the professor.
