Tirupur: Tirupur district Dharapuram and its environs received heavy rains yesterday. Dharapuram received 153 mm of rainfall and Gundadam received 200 mm of excess rainfall. Farmers in the Gundadam area were cultivating maize on more than 200 acres.
Farmers are involved in cultivating maize as it is a high yielding crop in a short period of time. Maize cultivation at a cost of about Rs 30,000 per acre is completely damaged by the rain.
Farmers are also worried about the lack of crop insurance and the Agriculture Department officials have requested the authorities to carry out an investigation and provide them with adequate compensation.
