Schools in Coimbatore to mount POCSO Act awareness notice boards for benefit of students

The Coimbatore Police Department is in the process of placing notice boards that create awareness on the POCSO Act across the city's schools in the wake of the tragic suicide of a 17-year old due to sexual assault by a teacher in her school.


Coimbatore: A notice board on awareness of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act will be mounted in all schools in Coimbatore district. The District Police Department is taking steps to mount the POCSO boards in all schools in the city to create awareness on what is the POCSO Act, the punishment if charged under the POCSO Act and also safety measures for girl students.

The tragic suicide of a 17-year old girl student due to sexual abuse by a teacher in her own school and the subsequent indifference of the school management that allowed the perpetrator to go unpunished has sent shockwaves across the state and the nation.

The accused Mithun Chakravarthy and the School Principal, Meera Jackson who failed to act upon the deceased girl’s complaint have been charged under the POCSO Act and arrested. The public, politicians and activists have demanded for stringent action to be taken on the two accused and urged the police and district administration to immediately create awareness of the POCSO Act among students. Hence, the POCSO Act awareness boards will now be mounted outside the offices of Principals in all the schools.
