District Farmers' Association seek relief for farmers due to damage of crops owing to incessant rains

The District Farmers’ Association President sought relief assistance for farmers owing to the damage of crops due to the Northeast monsoon.

Coimbatore: The District Farmers' Association of Coimbatore district has sought relief aid for farmers owing to crops being vastly damaged due to the Northeast monsoon. Tomatoes had rotten and banana plantations have reportedly been damaged due to the Northeast monsoon rains in the district. Hence, the District Wing of the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association raised requests for the provision of relief assistance to the affected farmers.

Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association's District President, S Palaniswami stated, “About 27,000 acres of tomato and pandal varieties of vegetable are under cultivation in various areas including Mettupalayam, Sirumugai, Thondamuttur, Kinathukadavu, Pollachi and Kottur in Coimbatore district. Banana and paddy are also cultivated in the state. The Northeast monsoon rains for over 10 days inundated several districts. Tomato farmers were adversely affected in Coimbatore and heavy rains accompanied by strong winds damaged several acres of banana cultivation. Therefore, the District administration should immediately inspect the entire district and arrange for rain relief funds to farmers,” demanded S Palaniswami.
