The ISHA yoga centre organized a two-day field training for farmers on pest management in fields.
Coimbatore: A pest management field training was organized for farmers in Coimbatore on behalf of ISHA in which Entomologist Selvam undertook the programme.
On behalf of Isha Agricultural Mission, a special agricultural field training was conducted on 13thand 14th November at Isha Organic Farming Farm at Semmedu village in Coimbatore district under the theme 'Watch Out for Insects'. The training was conducted by Selvam, entomologist.
As many as 54 farmers from various districts including Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Tiruvannamalai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Kallakurichi, Dharmapuri, Thoothukudi and Nilgiris participated. The training was designed so that they could experience the characteristics and benefits of different types of insects. The farmers split into separate groups and visited the insects on the farm. The farmers inspected the insects practically.
Further, the farmers drew pictures of insects to understand in detail about the body structure of insects. In particular, the role of insects in organic farming, beneficial insects, harmful insects, methods of summoning beneficial insects and integrated pest management were explained in detail. It is due to excessive use of pesticides that oxidation in crops increases. Therefore, in order to prevent this completely, natural pest management methods were explained to the participating farmers.
Karthikeyan, a farmer from Coimbatore who participated in the training, said, 'My view of insects was different has completely changed after participating in this training organized by the Isha Foundation. I have just learnt that there are two types of insects, beneficial insects and harmful insects. Through this training, I have learnt that we can manage pests naturally without using any pesticides. This training further encourages those who want to do organic farming.'
Mr. Ramachandran, a farmer from Pudukottai, said, 'I continue to participate in Isha's various agricultural practices. In particular, I have learnt about pest management in detail through this 'Watch Out for Insects' initiative. This training was not just a classroom exercise, but it was very useful as it has practical sessions. It was a new experience to visit the garden in the morning and at night and see what kind of insects visited, their types and characteristics. This training is further helpful for me in organic farming. I am also keen to share what I have learnt from other farmers in our village.'
