On the eve of World Diabetes Day, more than 50 children suffering from 'Type 1' diabetes at the Coimbatore Government Hospital were handed over welfare aid worth lakhs of rupees on behalf of the 'Idayangal Arakkatalai'.
Coimbatore: On the eve of World Diabetes Day, the Hearts Foundation donated several lakhs worth assistance to over 50 beneficiaries suffering from Type 1 diabetes. On the eve of World Diabetes Day, a ceremony was held at the Coimbatore Government Hospital on Sunday to provide medical aid to poor children suffering from type 1 diabetes.
Government Hospital Dean, Dr. Nirmala presided. 'Idayangal Arakkatalai' President and Dialectologist, Dr. Krishnan Swaminathan provided medical assistance to 50 poor children suffering from type 1 diabetes under the banner name 'Kovai Thulir'. Besides, this he provided four children with four insulin pump kits worth a total of Rs 8 lakh, state-of-the-art equipment called an insulin pump worth Rs 2 lakh was also handed over to the children from socio economic weaker sections of the society.
The pager-like device is designed to help children regulate insulin levels through the button system without pain. In addition, he provided various medical aid items, including a glucometer, to help poor children suffering from diabetes who are undergoing treatment at the Coimbatore Government Hospital.
Dr. Krishnan Swaminathan said, 'Diabetes can be classified into two types, 'type 1' and 'type 2'. Type 2 diabetes is more common in people. Type 1 diabetes is one of the most dangerous diseases. Children between the ages of 1 and 14 are the most affected. Frequent urination, fatigue, poor eyesight, and excessive hunger are some of the symptoms of the condition. Failure to diagnose and treat the disease early can lead to a condition called 'diabetic coma' and death.'
He said that 'Children with this type of diabetes need to take insulin and medications throughout their lives.' He informed, 'I have started and run the 'Idayangal Arakkattalai' with the aim of providing free medical care to children from poor families who are affected by this condition. On behalf of our foundation we are providing insulin and medicine to poor children affected by this disease in all parts of Tamil Nadu. insulin medication should be kept in the fridge. Many poor parents are unaware of this. With this in mind we are raising awareness among parents of children who are dependent on insulin medication. Apart from that we have provided a small fridge to Coimbatore Government Hospital and parents from poor families. More than 10 thousand children across Tamil Nadu are affected by this disease. As many as 700 children in Coimbatore district are affected by the disease. Of these, 500 children are from poor families. All of them are being treated at public and private hospitals.'
