2,153 polling stations to be set up in Coimbatore in 703 wards

An in-person review on the basic amenities will be held by the officials ahead of the local polls to be conducted in Coimbatore Corporation, Municipalities and Panchayats


Coimbatore:A total of 2,153 polling booths will be set up in Coimbatore for the local body elections and the officials to conduct a review on basic amenities in the stations.

As many as 2,153 polling stations will be set up in 703 wards for local body elections in Corporations, Municipalities, and Town Panchayats in the Coimbatore district. Officials are planning to inspect the polling booths for basic amenities.

One polling station per 1,400 voters in the Corporation and one polling booth for 1,200 voters in Municipalities and Town Panchayats has been declared.According to the list formed based on the numbers, a total of 1,290 polling stations will be set up in 100 wards in Coimbatore Corporation, 69 polling stations in 33 wards in Mettupalayam Municipality, 89 polling stations in 36 wards in Pollachi Municipality, 73 polling stations in 21 wards in Valparai Municipality and 632 polling stations in 513 wards in 33 Town Panchayats in 703 wards in the district are set up.

A review meeting in this regard was held at the district Collector's office. Based on the review meeting, election department officials will soon review the basic amenities at the polling stations.

A district election wing official said, "It is proposed to organise an early review to determine if the polling stations are armed with basic amenities like lighting, latrines, drinking water facilities and quality of buildings at polling stations. If the polling stations lack the basic facilities, the same will be provided.."
