Coimbatore Student Suicide and Sexual Abuse: Principal Meera Jackson arrested in Bangalore

In connection with the suicide of the 12th grade student who was sexually harassed by a teacher of a private school in Coimbatore, the special team of police on Saturday night arrested the Principal of the School in Banglore.


Earlier, Meera Jackson, the Principal was booked under section 21 (Punishment for failure to report or record a case) of the POCSO Act.

According to reports ofAll Women Police (West), the 17-year-old girl who was studying in Class XI of Chinmaya Vidyalaya School situated in RS Puram was sexually assaulted by Physics teacher K Mithun Chakkaravarthi (31). Mithun Chakkaravarthi sexually assaulted her several times in March this year during special classes. Unable to undergo the sexual torture any further, the student hadreportedly complained to the school principal Meera Jackson, who callously asked the student to "brush off" the incident and also asked her not to disclose the matter to her parents. The principal had also arrangedcounselling for the student without informing or seeking any permission from her family.

Later, the school had dismissed Mithun for his behaviour. However, unable to continue in the school, two months ago, the student obtained TC from the school and enrolled her in Ammani Ammal Corporation School at RS Puram. In this situation, the 17-year-old who was under immense stress, on Thursday evening took the extreme step at her home.

She also left behind a note mentioning two more names, apart from the teacher, for allegedly having sexually assaulted her. The death of the student triggered a chain of protests by political parties, student associations and women associations who demanded to arrestMeera andMithun Chakkaravarthi for abetting suicide.

On Friday, the police booked the teacher, Mithun under POCSO and arrested him on Friday night. He has been remanded in a sub-jail in Udumalpet.

As no case was filed on the Principal, the city saw multiple protests on Saturday demandingarrest of the Principal for mishandling the sexual abuse complaint by the student and for not escalating the issue to her parents and tight authorities.

On Saturday night, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jayachandran confirmed that Meera Jackson, Principal of Chinmaya Vidyalaya has been booked under POCSO and two special teams have been formed to arrest the Principal who was reported to be absconding.

On Saturday night, the special team arrested Meera Jackson in Bangalore. Reports confirm that the Police are on the way from Bangalore to Coimbatore with the accused and that she will be presented before a magistrate and remanded.
