Coimbatore City's All Women Police have booked a private school teacher under the POCSO Act and abetment to suicide of a 17-year old girl who killed herself after she was sexually assaulted by the teacher.
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore All Women Police booked a private school teacher who has allegedly been the cause for one of his students, a 17-year old girl to commit suicide due to sexual assault by the teacher.
17-year-old student from Ukkadam, Kottai Medu area is a Class 12 student studying at Chinmaya Vidyalaya in R S Puram. She ended her life by suicide when she hung herself to death on Thursday evening at around 5 pm, at her house. The girl had left behind a letter stating that her physics teacher, Mithun Chakravarthy had been harassing her sexually.
The Coimbatore All Women Police in R S Puram registered a case against Mithun who was rounded up a while ago. He has been booked for abetting suicide and also charged for sexual harassment under the POCSO Act. The girl had reportedly taken the extreme step of ending her life after the school administration turned a blind eye to her complaints despite being aware of the sexual assault that the teacher had been committing.
The Chief Education Officer of Coimbatore district, Geetha is inspecting the school. 17-year-old student's friends had reportedly informed her via phone that she had been expelled from the school. According to fellow students, 17-year-old student was subjected to repeated sexual assault and harassment by Mithun Chakravarthy, the physics teacher.
The All Women Police have booked Mithun under IPC 306, abetment to suicide and POCSO Act, a subsection for continuous sexual harassment and are interrogating him. Police sources state that the announcement of his arrest will be done by 10 pm after a complete investigation.
17-year-old student’s friends and fellow students have raised their voices in demanding justice for her. The incident has created a stir and saddened the neighbourhood and students.
