Patient provided with planned emergency Sternotomy. Life saving procedure for penetrating chest injury successfully performed at Coimbatore Medical College hospital.
Coimbatore: Gnanamuthu Cathrenal (53), is wife of Lawrence, residing at 223 Raja mill road, RG compound, Pollachi, Coimbatore, was admitted at the Coimbatore medical college hospital on 20.10.2021 at 11.21AM with History of Self-inflicting stabbing chest injury with sharp instrument.
She was then evaluated and planned for emergency Sternotomy. Injuries in the right ventricle free wall with hemopericardium and diaphragm injury were noted — during surgery. The sharp instrument was removed and injuries in the right ventricle and injuries in diaphragm were repaired.
About 300ml of hemorrhagic fluid in the pericardial cavity were removed. This is a lifesaving procedure as the patient will die otherwise. Under the guidance of Dean Professor Dr. Nirmala, the following team performed the procedure.

The team consist of Anaesthesiology Professor and HOD Dr. Kalyanasundaram, Anaesthesioloy Assistant Professor Dr. Chandrakala and Cardiothoracic Surgery Associate Professor Dr. A. Shivanraj, Cardiothoracic Surgery Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Minnathullah, Dr.Elavarasan, Dr. Aravind, staff nurse Porkodi and Kirthika also assisted. This procedure was performed under Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) free of cost. Now the patient is doing well.
