Farmers go on a march and submit a petition to Nilgiris MP; demand no setting up of industrial estate in Annur

Over 800 farmers marched and submitted a petition to Nilgiris MP Raja, demanding the abolition of setting up an industrial estate in Annur.

Coimbatore: Farmers marched together and submitted a petition to Nilgiris MP Raja demanding the abolition of setting up an industrial estate in Annur area in Coimbatore.

The government has decided to set up an industrial estate in the Annur next to Coimbatore. About 1,504 hectares of land in Annur covering about half-a-dozen of revenue villages in Mettupalayam taluk will be acquired. Farmers have been objecting to the plans and took up various protests condemning the move.

Over 300 people demonstrated against this on the 1st of November. The farmers lamented that the livelihood of about 50,000 people living in Annur and the hamlets depending on agriculture will be affected.

A resolution not to acquire agricultural land was passed in five Panchayats and brought to the notice of the district collector. More than 1,000 applications were sent to the CM.

A petition demanding a legal notification stating no lands of farmers shall be acquired and cancellation of industrial estate project was submitted to the collector. The Collector stated that talks shall be held with higher officials on 15th and appropriate action will be taken.

However, over 800 farmers met the Nilgiris MP Raja and submitted a petition pressing the abolition of setting up an industrial estate in the area.

The farmers have decided to meet the Collector on the 16th. The farmers stated that they would be grateful if the project is called off. On the contrary, they will continue to protest.

They stated that the farmers anticipated a ray of hope with the 70-year dream project of the Athikadavu Avinashi Project, but acquiring farmlands has depressed them.
