The Tamil Nadu Forest Minister stated that two new check dams will be constructed at an estimate of ₹.90 crores to address the drinking water issues of the Coonoor people.
The Nilgiris: The Forest Minister, K Ramachandran has stated that two new check dams are to be constructed near Rallia Dam.
There has been a long-standing drinking water problem in the Coonoor municipality area of Nilgiris district.
The Rallia and the Bandhumai dams are filled to capacity, due to the rains for the past 10 days. But water has been discharging from the front gate of the dam.
The Tamil Nadu Forest Minister, K Ramachandran addressing the issue, inspected the Rallia Dam in Coonoor accompanied by the municipal officials. He stated that appropriate action has been taken to construct two new check dams, at an outlay of ₹.90 crores near the Rallia Dam, which will address the water scarcity of Coonoor people and repair the damages in Rallia Dam.
The Minister further ordered the repair of roads leading to Mount Doddabetta, which is now closed for tourists due to its poor condition. He ordered that the road be repaired speedily at a cost of 15 lakhs within a month that will benefit the workers who are dependent on the tourism industry in the area.
He said that all the precautions have been taken in the Nilgiris district as the Met Office has warned of heavy rainfall in the region from Friday.
